The Big Spring Fire Department is a civil service department and currently has the following positions:

The Chief

The Chief provides fire protection for life and property, assures that life support services are provided at the scene of an emergency, ensures that the public is educated about fire prevention, and ensures that fire, safety, and health inspections are conducted in accordance with city, state, and federal standards. Duties include supervising the department and its employees, planning and budgeting for future departmental activities, commanding firefighting teams during emergencies, and acting as a liaison between the department, other public employees, and general public.

The Deputy Chief

The Deputy Chief protects the city's residents and property, and enforces laws and ordinances by supervising and managing the fire department. The Deputy Chief plans, coordinates and directs the activities of the fire department and reviews and implements department policies.

The EMS Coordinator

The EMS Coordinator protects the city's residents and property, and enforces laws and ordinances by supervising and managing the fire department. The Coordinator plans, coordinates, and directs the activities of the Fire Department, reviews and implements department policies and coordinates all aspects of the Emergency Medical Services.

The Lieutenant

The Lieutenant ensures the protection of residents and property from fire, preventing fires whenever possible. Duties include supervising a fire station and its firefighters, conducting pre-fire planning inspections, public education, and fire suppression activities.

The Engineer

The Engineer ensures the protection of residents and property from fire, preventing fires whenever possible. Duties include driving fire apparatus, maintaining apparatus and equipment, conducting pre-fire planning inspections, public education, and fire suppression activities.

The Firefighter

The Firefighter ensures the protection of residents and property from fire and prevents fires whenever possible.

The Fire Marshal/Deputy Chief

The Fire Marshal's primary duty is fire prevention. This is accomplished by public education, new building plan reviews, inspections of new buildings and yearly inspections of businesses. The fire marshal is charged with investigating all fires. This includes determining the origin and cause of the fire. If the fire was a result of Arson, it is the duty of the Fire Marshal to investigates who is responsible for starting the fire and arrest the subject. The Fire Marshal enforces all fire codes within the City of Big Spring and ETJ.
